My cooking vs. Willet's cooking

Recently Will started working as a job that doesn't let off until past 11, so he sadly cannot come over to prepare elaborate meals for me (I mean us) as often. Yesterday was his day off, and he came and made a mess in my kitchen (I'm not complaining!).

WILL'S FOOD

Will loves cooking steak, so last night he seared 2 steaks (with garlic, cayenne, and butter) and finished them in the oven. Below the steaks are the popover (wikipedia def: A popover is a light, hollow roll made from an egg batter similar to that used in making Yorkshire pudding. The name "popover" comes from the fact that the batter swells or "pops" over the top of the muffin tin while baking. They can also be baked in individual custard cups). First time eating a popover! Looks similar to a "dan ta"--Chinese egg custard dessert--but it's savory and is a bread.

Ginger carrots and baby bok choy for veggies and a glass of Beaujolais to round out the meal.

MY FOOD

Tonight Will worked, so this is what I prepared. On the left is stir-fried baby bok choy with garlic. On the right is a big pot of Japanese curry with carrots, onions, chicken breast, and red potatoes. I forgot to grab the rice from Will's place so I served it with linguine...Italian-Japanese fusion?

I made this earlier in the week. I love water spinach (kong xin cai)! I am always surprised at how a huge bunch of it can shrink down after cooking.

I made this one pot wonder last week. I used white miso paste to make miso soup. Then I added cubes of tofu, shittake mushroom, fish ball halves, baby bok choy, and udon noodles. Since Will doesn't get home until late, I left the leftovers in his fridge so that he'd have a quick meal when he came home exhausted. I'm all about making enough for leftovers now.

This creation resulted from scrounging through the freezer and pantry to see what I could throw together, since the fridge hadn't been replenished due my focus on school work. So I took some instant grits, cooked it with chicken stock, and threw some frozen peas in it (kind of like a poor woman's risotto? ;)). Then I thawed some shrimp and stir-fried it with garlic and red pepper flakes.

At Will's new job he has to break down a ridiculous amount of fruits. Since he just started, he bought some melons and citrus from the market to practice. He stocked my fridge with 2 big containers of pre-cut pineapple, honeydew, tuscan cantaloupe, and watermelon.

In this case, I don't mind if he brings his work home ;).

I only showed one example of Will's cooking as opposed to several of mine, but I think the difference between our cooking is clear. Diane's > Willet's. I WIN!

Here is the first paragraph of a reading I have to do for one of my UTeach classes.

In 1994, Mattel created a Barbie doll that said, "Math is hard." The Barbie Liberation Organization, a group composed of activists and media personalities, among others, protested against Barbie's perpetuation of gender-based stereotyping. The media publicized the case and discussion on gender stereotyping in children's toys ensued on and off the air, leading Mattel to withdraw the "math is hard" Barbie from the market. (Ben-Zeev 189).

This doesn't give you much insight as to what I'm learning from my experiences, but that's another post .

This extensive Apache picture post was requested by my sister.

We bought Apache a pack of natural chews made out of pig, lamb, and cow body parts. The one in his mouth is beef ligament. He is super possessive of these treats; if we even walk in his direction he'll start a low growl :/.

My mom gave him a part of her dying bamboo plant. He broke it down in a matter of minutes.

Lately Apache seems to be losing his appetite. My dad was concerned and would write notes like these to keep track.

Why I Run

My sister asked for a post on my philosophy for running. I don't have one. I originally started running because Will started running along Town Lake, and I wanted to encourage him to continue running so I ran along with him. Then I got the Nike+ system and ipod nano as additional motivational devices, and they've worked so far. We create challenges and goals for how many miles we want to run in a week. Don't know if we'll make the 15 mile goal I set for this week; it's Thursday already and I've only run 5-6 miles :/. As I run on Town Lake, I see all different kinds of people: the shirtless guys with defined muscles, the chubbier walkers, the surprisingly fit white haired joggers, the young parents with trendy trail strollers. And today there were the 3 asians: me, Will and Margie...not super fit but not terribly out of shape, going at a slow and steady pace, and running because it feels good.

Although I think Will secretly also runs because he feels less guilty for eating more food, like this post-run meal of vietnamese combination sandwich and black coffee (the best in Houston, according to him, is @ Givrals in Diho shopping center).
